About the Event

Modal jazz is an improvisational concept based on the use of pitches, scales or modes, as opposed to the traditional structure of composition and improvisation based on chordal harmony. In music, the term "mode" refers to a series of sounds and is often used to refer to a series of sounds other than major. Modes have already been used in the compositions of composers such as Debussy and B. Bartok. They felt that it was necessary to go beyond the traditional major/minor keys. From the 1950s, jazz musicians also began to use the modal approach. Modal jazz developed in the 1950s and 1960s and is particularly associated with the recordings of Miles Davis's so-called 'first quintet' on the albums Milestones and Kind of Blue, as well as the recordings of the John Coltrane Quartet from 1960 to 1964. Other notable modal jazz performers include Woody Shaw, Bill Evans, Herbie Hancock, Wayne Shorter and others.
