About the Event
WITHIN REACH / ROKAS STIEPIENA ATTĀLUMĀ / В ПРЕДЕЛАХ ДОСЯГАЕМОСТИ By Mark Sun Roz 28.07 - 13.08.22
M/Gallery presents “WITHIN REACH” solo exhibition with Latvian contemporary artist Mark Sun Roz. The show will be on view from 28th July until 13th August 2022 and will feature 10 new original artworks.
Combining the hyper-contemporary characters and symbols with the ancient backgrounds, one half of the collection focuses on the objects that appear to be reaching out to something - SpongeBob Squarepants is offering an NFT to an Ancient Greek warrior, Patrik is being poked by an unknown hand appearing from the outside the canvas, two male figures are put together with Peppa Pig bandaids, and an anime girl floats in the space Venus-like, enticingly seductive. Seemingly distant concepts are put together in harmony; despite the differences in references, the subjects blend in with confidence.
The second part of the collection focuses on the concept of being “within reach” in another sense - here, the artist exposes some of his personal moments, feelings, and anecdotes without censorship; in a sense, it’s the artist’s diary of his daily life. The artworks are created in a free-flowing process, without hyper-perfectionism, “close to life”. Here, we see the sketched character go through various daily life scenes - enjoying the flight with a cheeky glass of wine, aimlessly scrolling on his phone, getting annoyed with his computer, or driving through the city. These sculptures find their realisation freely, with lightness and humour.
Artworks have different development stages, same as us - humans. We are always changing and developing, never staying the same, or in the same place. In our daily lives, both sides are connecting - the finely-honed self-image, beautiful in details, and the messy, chaotic flow of thoughts, which get us through life.
Together, both collections represent a new stage in Mark Sun Roz’s career; he is starting to use different art techniques to develop and change his artist signature. In addition to the physical artworks, M/Gallery is excited to present the never-seen-before sketches from Mark’s iPad projected near the pieces as part of the exhibition. Get to know Roz’s both sides, and explore the contemporary sculpture-making in WITHIN REACH at M/Gallery until the 13th of August.
